Caving Under The Pressure

I'm feeling the pressure. Not the pressure of quitting my job, dropping everything and moving to another country. I'm fine with that. Bring it! The pressure I'm caving under is that of the inaugural blog post! The pressure to be witty, engaging, intelligent...to leave my readers wanting more. As if I'm really going to have "readers" - besides you, Ali. Here goes...

I've spent much of the past few weeks since coming clean about my travel plans answering the question "Why?" My quick, semi-sarcastic response is "Why not?" but there is actually a lot of truth to that. I am in a rut - bored with my job, the city I live in and a lot of the people I know (no offense). So I decided that I could either a) bitch about it or b) do something about it. So I went with option B. Option B also came with two choices - a) get a dog or b) throw caution to the wind and move to another country. Naturally, I went with B again...because becoming a dog owner would totally turn my world upside down. :)

Decision to move...no problem. Next decision...where to go? After listening to my gut and doing some research, I settled on Prague. And I promise it has nothing to do with my previous experience in that city - drinking absinthe in mass quantities, getting kicked out of a bar and sleeping on the Charles Bridge. Ah...the (foggy) memories! I expect my upcoming experience to be a bit more tame since I'm now in my thirties (groan) and will have a full-time job teaching English at The Caledonian School.

I don't want to look back in 5 years when I'm likely to have a few more responsibilities and regret not taking advantage of the fact that I'm 30 years old and single with a few dollars in the bank. Instead of settling for my current circumstances which are just "fine", I'm changing the course of my life! On January 7, 2009, I'll set out on a brand new adventure where I'll experience new things, see new places, meet new people and, perhaps most importantly, learn more about myself than I ever could if I didn't make this leap. Scary. Exciting.
